Workshop on “Genders as Fermentations: Exploring Identities through Thoughtful Making”

April 21, from 5 pm, Teresa Terrari and Giorgia Cravero hold the workshop
“Genders as Fermentations: Exploring Identities through Thoughtful Making” at the Pollenzo Food Lab
How do fermentation and gender intertwine? Is there a way to explore identity through the practice of fermentation? Can we delve into our expressions of identity through material practice? This workshop is a dedicated space for exploring the interconnections between fermentation and gender, centering the role of identity – both with a theoretical and applied approach –, with a focus on fermented practices and how these can be a tool to enquire gender manifestation.
Together with Teresa Tessari (former student of the Master in New Food Thinking and current classroom assistant) and Giorgia Cravero (former undergraduate student), the participants will draw connections between the importance of questioning the imposed categories of gender and the need, in fermentation, to be in an ever-changing status and in constant relationship with others. Finally, the fundamental role of the environment in which fermentation and gender expression can – or cannot – take place will be questioned, focusing on the importance of favourable and unfavourable conditions for the self-expression of beings.
The workshop will end on a hands-on experience, built on the explored topics, in which participants will find a space of self-expression through the material practice of fermentation.
NOTE: bring your own 500g jar!
