Slow Fish 2015, catch one of these activities in your net!

Finally! Slow Fish is here!

Slow Food and The University of Gastronomic Sciences is putting on its 7th biennial Slow Fish in Genova, Italy from May 14 -17th. The occasion promotes a sustainable relationship with our seas, tackling topics from environmental sea hazards, to over-fishing and ocean politics. It brings together fisherman and allies from all over the world to give them agency, save their waters, their incomes, and re-dignify their work with fish.

We want to embrace the beauty of this disappearing trade, highlighting to visitors the route their daily fish takes to their dinner plates—through lecture, debate, tastings, and of course, a little play.

We are proud to present you our young, creative, and educational line-up for our favorite fishy event:

This year — to make our tours and events even more interesting and educational — we are partnering with marine biology students of the University of Genova for our Personal Fisher tours! We wanted to create a program that promotes the role of youth in the complex world of fisheries, and gives participants a diverse and in-depth view of how to buy fish in a sustainable way.

Students from both The University of Gastronomic Sciences and The University of Genova’s Marine Biology Department are going to offer you one of the most exciting shopping tours you’ve ever had! Maybe a bit more smelly than usually, but definitely one for the books!

They will bring you to Genova’s local, daily fish-auction, which is just a few minutes by foot from the Porto Antico, where the real fishy business is happening! While meeting fishermen and aggregators alike, your group leaders will teach you how to recognize the best fish to buy for your palate, your wallet, and the planet through tips on how to distinguish quality, fresh fish, and recognize which species are more sustainable.

Aperitivi

When the fishermen are headed home, stands are slowly closing down, and the sun is setting, we’re not quite ready for you to leave!

Every evening at the close of the Slow Fish fair, we invite you to join us for aperitivo at the University stand at 7pm. Come have a drink, talk, and enjoy some food provided by one of the wonderful fish exhibitors from the fair. Oysters from Holland, Mauritius bottarga, bacalá, and more, served to you by students and the fish producers alike! It’s a great opportunity to learn about their production, ask all your questions, and finish your day the Italian way!

Eat-In:

After our success during Slow Fish 2013, where more than 300 people sat down for lunch at our Fish Eat-In, we’re bringing it back to the beautiful, antique harbor of Genova! You can join the 2015 edition on Saturday, the 16th at 3pm!

But what exactly is an Eat In, you’re wondering?

Born in San Francisco, an Eat-In is a polticial-gastronomic endeavor that utilizes public spaces to host a shared-meal with anyone who wants to eat, drink, chat, and make a statement together. But most importantly it’s a celebration, a social gastronomic moment open to everyone!

We invite you to eat some delicious fish and celebrate the bounty of the Mediterranean with us! Students of The University of Gastronomic Sciences have teamed-up with exhibitors and Genovese fish markets to prepare a light seafood lunch that highlights the “poor fish“ of the our seas. Come sample these chefs’ efforts!

Bike NEat

A tour of Genova’s coastal scenery and gastronomic traditions on two-wheels…

Back in October, we organized a tour of Torino’s alternative food scene by bike in honor of Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre. We’re back, and our trusty two-wheelers have taken us all the way to Genova for the Slow Fish Fair!

We’ve designed a fantastic gastro-bike tour, highlighting fishermen-villages near Genova and all the delicious treats that come from this culture!

Sunday, May 17th, we’ll take you on a four-hour, slow excursion from Porto Antico to Porticciolo di Nervi, and back. We’ve scouted peculiar little streets and unusual places to eat, and we thought it’d be best to take our time. So plan on easy-riding, beautiful vantage points, a fresh fish lunch, and a cold beer by the Nervi harbor. A fine way to spend a sunny Sunday in Liguria!
